Set in the Carpathian mountains, Vienna and Corfu during the late eighteenth century, Nikos Themelis’s latest novel, For a Little Companionship, deals both with affairs of the heart and political adventures.
The story also explores how the Enlightenment and the French Revolution play themselves out in the center and periphery of Europe. In a realistic narrative that ably deploys his carefully-drawn characters in their settings, Themelis neatly links all three strands of the action.
He brings to life the intellectual quests of the period, evoking them in the everyday experiences of the protagonists. An undercurrent of humour adds a further dimension to the intense conflicts in which the author typically embroils his heroes. Throughout this ambitious book, scrupulous attention is given to the accuracy of historical detail, though this is always done without the slightest hint of pedantry.
