Bringing together in masterful fashion Winckelmann’s homosexuality, his archaeological research and his relations in society, Isaris takes the hero to the verge of depression. Beneath the unruffled surface of the art historian and archaeologist’s career, the author reveals a broken man, filled with passion and tension. In this game of special circumstances and unexpected inconsistencies, art is unable to smooth over real life and give it balance.
