The central character in the book is Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717–1768), who promoted art in its most idealized form, proclaiming to one and all the timeless superiority of Ancient Greek painting and sculpture Alexandros Isaris contrasts Winckelmann’s idealism with the violent manner of his death in Trieste, where a strange cook murders him for obscure motives. Bringing together in masterful fashion Winckelmann’s homosexuality, his archaeological research and his relations in society, Isaris takes the hero to the verge of depression. Beneath the unruffled surface of the art historian and archaeologist’s career, the author reveals a broken man, filled with passion and tension. In this game of special circumstances and unexpected inconsistencies, art is unable to smooth over real life and give it balance. It is a lively account, full of accurate detail and with a varied cast of characters that are portrayed in discreet depth.
