Writer Yannis Xanthoulis fell in love with the matchless beauty of old Istanbul when he went to Turkey in search of his roots. As he roamed the city, he was entranced by the wooden houses, the bridges, roads, little restaurants and the markets thronging with people.
In interviews the author has said that his book follows in the footsteps of other writers on Turkey such as John Freely and Philip Mansel, but his is a very personal take which combines his childhood memories of the city with experiences of visits made in adulthood. It’s an account of a Greeks meeting Turks in beautiful, cosmopolitan surroundings.
Xanthoulis learnt Turkish twelve years ago to gain deeper understanding of his place of his origin, and the book reflects his efforts to decipher, understand and experience a culture that seems to him familiar and alien at the same time.
