The Interrogation
 Elias Maglinis

128pp.
Kedros, 2008
ISBN13: 978-960-04-3835-2

Torture and self-torture haunt a family through three generations in Elias Maglinis’s latest novel, The Interrogation. A communist undergoes hell on earth at the hands of his persecutors during the Greek civil war that followed World War II. Years later, his son is subjected to complete degradation by the police at a time when Greece is ruled by the colonels’ junta. His daughter, an artist, makes self-mutilation the focus of her performances. The author creates a potent conjunction between the force fields of torture and of love, to generate scenes of intense conflict. Though his heroes are crushed beneath the unbearable weight of their own being, his heroes are only too willing ready in their turn to crush the existence of others. Caught up in a family inferno from which they never manage to escape, they clash – destructively, lethally.
