The London Day of Laura Jackson
 Christos Chrisopoulos

205pp.
Kastaniotis, 2008
ISBN13: 978-960-03-4784-5

Poet Laura Riding Jackson (1901-1991), is the inspiration for this novel by Christos Chrisopoulos. When Riding made an unsuccessful attempt at suicide by leaping from the third floor of a house in Hammersmith, which she was sharing with poet Robert Graves and his wife, it was just one of many exploits in a vivid, unconventional life. That incident that helped put an end to the Graves’ marriage, and the two writers embarked on a fruitful period of collaboration in life and art that would last a number of years. Through his heroine’s inner contradictions and her complex relationship with language and expression, the author explores how difficult it is for poetry to address and transcend reality. His portrait goes beyond the anecdotal to trace how Riding’s career was bound up with the meaning and mission of poetry itself, and how her trajectory as an artist ended in voluntary silence.
