Ever since he was a boy, the renowned pirate Perperoua Ponte Punta De Tormes the Indomitable has dressed as Harlequin for Carnival. On a visit to Venice for the festivities, he wanders the streets happily in his mask and costume. But when he tries to take a tour of the Grand Canal, the gondolier demands the extortionate sum of fifty golden ducats and an argument ensues. Peperoua insists he’s just a poor Harlequin and not in costume, and that if he did dress up he’d choose to be a pirate. The gondolier has some nasty things to say about pirates then reveals that he is only dressed as a gondolier, and is actually Sior Bousola, a wealthy merchant, owner of a palace and fifteen gondolas. Tempers rise and the two make a curious wager. Alexandra Bizi’s amusing story for children aged 6-8 comes with appealing illustrations by Natalia Kapatsoulia.
