Numbers
 Aristeidis Antonas

303pp.
Agra, 2008
ISBN13: 978-960-325-755-4

The gothic tradition meets Borges’ mythology of libraries in Numbers, a novel by Aristeidis Antonas. The book is an inter-textual game that owes something to writers as different as Yevgeny Zamyatin, George Orwell, Elias Canetti and Carlos Frabetti. The author has concocted a spirited mix of styles and genres that range from the philosophical novel, horror, adventure and crime fiction to the family chronicle and the occult parable. The basic motifs of Numbers are the quest for knowledge and its suppression, confinement and freedom, and the vision of a polity that is pledged to authenticity in life and love. This is a game of logic and numerology, in the kind of setting that belongs to fantasy or science fiction, and where both allegorical elements and psychological characteristics also have a part to play. An intricate plot constructed with exemplary skill retains its secrets till the last possible moment.
