His father has disappeared but his mother and grandmother never talk about it, even though Manolis can see they are upset. He’s doing badly at school, where nothing interests him. Then he discovers his father’s vast collection of vinyl records stashed in a spare room. His father used to run a private radio station from home at a time when that was illegal. Although his father has given no sign of life, his mother and grandmother have been receiving regular deposits of money from an unknown source in Italy. That’s all Manolis needs to develop an interest in learning Italian, and he starts lessons with the mysterious Signora Irene. Coded messages that may come from his father make their appearance. Manolis and his grandmother turn detectives in an adventure that takes them to a village in Italy. Play it in Reverse is an absorbing story for children of nine and over.
