Being short is just one issue facing Ilias Makris. Luckily he grows taller than his mother, precisely when he needs to, just before going to summer camp and starting junior high school. That gives him a definition for ‘tall’: i.e. someone who is taller than his or her mother. Ilias has a need for order. His way of dealing with the world around him is to compile lists, which he writes up in notebooks according to subject, and reviews in the light of new information. The Book of Definitions is the second in a gently humorous sequence where his notebook collection becomes material for his autobiography. The summer camp presents challenges to his tidy soul – sharing a messy tent comes a shock – and to his powers of reason, as he attempts to solve "The Case of the Red Pen". Inspired by the crime section of the camp’s library.
