The Hawaii nightclub in the seamy inner city district of Metaxourgheio caters to men whose sexual preferences are strictly non- mainstream. Its customers are men of all trades and backgrounds who adore the young transvestites at the Hawaii and do whatever is needed to spend a few hours with them. But the taboos imposed by the hidebound morality of 1960s Athens can engender guilt about proscribed sexual desires.
Blue Suede Shoes portrays prostitution and homosexuality coming to the surface in the politically charged atmosphere of a society that is trying to put the ugly past of the civil war behind it and keep pace with developments in Western Europe. Yet the heroes are less damaged by differences among political parties than they are by the suffocating circumstances of their everyday lives.
A convincing cast of working class characters peoples a vibrant, tangible universe of extreme contrasts and contradictions.
