When an elderly author dies, forgotten by readers and critics, the manager of the apartment block he lived in rushes to publish his last manuscript and the remarkable secret it contains.
Rapid Deterioration is a novel about yearning and the refusal of love to arrive and take effect at the right moment. It shows how a neglected artist can suddenly recapture lost time and how a writer’s work can sometimes turn into a painful lifetime project. Thanassis Chimonas sets his story in Athens after the 2004 Olympic Games, where migrants are rounded up every so often and thrown into detention cells, and also in Paris of the 1970s, seen as a place of dreams and refuge.
The intentionally cold narration casts a chilly but revealing light on characters and situations in an atmosphere of mystery, where an intense ambivalence as to the real meaning of events persists till the very end.
