In her latest novel, Dark Vardaris, Elena Houzouri sets love and its losses in an electric atmosphere of war and destruction. The place is Thessaloniki, and the time, the Balkan Wars, when a Greek teacher and a Bulgarian officer fall in love with the same rich young woman of Byzantine origins.
The backdrop to their fascinating story is the ongoing political and military conflict between the Ottoman Empire and its former subjects and the subsequent alliance in which Serbia and Greece joined forces against Bulgaria.
The author deftly constructs the complex racial and social mosaic of northern Greece in the early 20th century in clear, vivid, colour snapshots.
Dark Vardaris is an amalgam of elements drawn from the tradition of the political and historical novel as well as from the epistolary novel and the bildungsroman, in addition to an inspired dialogue with the history of the art of photography.
