The biography on which the prize winning Greek-Spanish film of the life of Domenicos Theotokopoulos’s life is based situates the art of El Greco within the framework of his time. It traces the artist’s struggles against the art establishment of his day, his clash with the Inquisition, and his multi-faceted life in Crete, Venice, Bassano, Rome and Toledo. And it shows how both his ascetic character and the elongated, emaciated figures he painted brought something new to the art of the West.
A complex personality, El Greco – as he became known – set his mark on the history of art, thanks to his inspiration and powers of visual expression.
Dimitris Siatopoulos sets the historical context with a colourful portrayal of events, people and places that reveals the political, social and ideological conflicts of Europe then. But it is the painter who takes up most of the frame, constantly standing up for his values.
