Robert McCabe’s first long, slow trip to Greece by ship from New York in 1954 left him with a lifelong love of the country. Many of the photographs in On the Road with a Rollei in the ’50s were taken during that journey. His black and white images of the long voyage, scenes in France and Italy, and pictures from a later mission to Antarctica, frame the Greek scenes that enchanted him. Ordinary people – a fisherman fixing his net, a village woman carrying water, islanders dancing at a christening – are favourite subjects, the focus being on life as it was lived, simply but with zest. McCabe also records striking landscapes such as the rock formations of Meteora and the majesty of Cape Sounion. But it is the children, with their open faces and ready smiles, who are the stars of some of his most memorable shots, expressing the spirit of the place.
