Mum Never Lies
 Eleni Zahariadou

130pp.
To Rodakio, 2007
ISBN: 960-8372-17-8
ISBN13: 978-960-8372-17-7

Mum Never Lies introduces readers to a family where the son has a physical disability. The family is riven by conflict when the boy absolutely refuses to take charge of his own destiny. His parent’s protectiveness and his own unwillingness to assume even minimal responsibility for himself create unbearable stress and tension leading to unforeseen developments. Eleni Zahariadou puts narrative time to work on two levels in this story. She tells of the present, where the parents and their child are no longer alive, and the past, where the adults tried in vain to help their son and get him settled in life. Despite the subject and the focus on physical disability, there is no sense of melodrama in this novella, whose temporal dimensions give it almost the character of a novel.
