Poems by Christos Tsiamis, Bilingual Greek – English Edition translated by Judy Yiannakopoulou
Patras: Photographic Profile of a Vanishing City is architect-photographer Panagiotis Sotiropoulos’s intimate take on his hometown. His black and white pictures, the fruit of 25 years’ close observation, shun the obvious in favour of revealing unfamiliar scenes and unexpected facets of the familiar.
He records a lad perched on a street sign watching the carnival go by rather than taking a predictable wide shot of merry makers; a shadowy figure going who knows where, framed by the arch of a low bridge; the dark outline of a man painting the hull of a massive ferry that reaches beyond the frame; interiors of the city’s trademark old stores and tavernas, and the port itself, seen in mist, rain, and half light, rather than sparkling sunshine.
Poems by Christos Tsiamis, translated by Jane Nisselson Assimakopoulos and Karen Emmerich, accompany the bilingual Greek-English text translated by Judy Yiannakopoulou.
