Aikaterini Koumarianou is an Athenian whose family came from Constantinople on her father’s side and Chios on her mother’s. She graduated from the Philosophy School of Athens University and did postgraduate studies in Paris at the Ecole en Sciences Sociales. She was associate professor at the Paris Sorbonne IV and director of the Modern Greek Institute at the same university (1973-1983). She was visiting professor in the Political Science department of Athens Law School and in the Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies department of University of Cyprus. She writes on the history of Greek letters and education as related to the history of ideas in Europe. She has published books, studies and articles on the Greek Enlightenment, focusing on the history of the Greek press, the history of publishing (15th-19th century), travel and the movement of ideas in the Greek world.
