Dimitris Maronitis was born in Thessaloniki. After graduating from the university of Thessaloniki he pursued post-graduate studies at the universities of Mainz and Frankfurt. He lectured in Ancient Greek Literature at the University of Thessaloniki until 1967, when he was dismissed by the military dictatorship.
He was elected full professor of the Philosophy School of Thessaloniki University 1975 and has been visiting professor at universities in Germany, Austria and Cyprus.
He has written books, monographs and numerous articles on Herodotus, Homer, the ancient lyricists, and Modern Greek poetry and prose. He has translated Herodotus, Hesiod and Homer, and is working on a translation of The Odyssey.
He won the state essay award in 1981 for Limits of Lyricism in Odysseas Elytis.
Tribute is paid to his contribution to classical studies by the volume Euphrosyne. Studies in the Ancient Epic, and its Legacy in Honor of Dimitris N. Maronitis, eds. A. Rengakos - I. N. Kazazis. Stuttgart: F. Steiner 1999. In 2003 he was made Commander of the Order of the Phoenix.
