Theoharis Detorakis, who was born in 1939, is professor emeritus of Byzantine and Modern Greek philology, University of Crete. He is also a specialist on his native Crete and has published widely on its history, language and folklore. In 1985 the City of Irakleio, Crete awarded him the Nikos Kazantzakis Prize for his work.
