Haris Vlavianos was born in Rome in 1957. He studied economics and philosophy at the University of Bristol and political theory and history at the Oxford University, where he taught for five years. His PhD thesis Greece 1941-1949: From Resistance to Civil War, won an award from the UK-based Fafalios Foundation and was published by Μαcmillan (1992). He has published eight volumes of poetry, the most recent of which, After the End of Beauty (2003), was a candidate for the State Poetry Prize and the Diavazo Poetry Prize, and a collection of essays The Other Place (1994). He has also translated works by major writers including Whitman, Εzra Pound, Wallace Stevens, John Ashbery, Carlo Goldoni and William Blake. In 1993 he founded the journal Poisi, which he has edited since 2007. In June 2008 he founded a new literary periodical, Poiitiki. He is a founding member of the philosophical journal Cogito. He teaches history and the history of ideas at American College of Greece and translation theory at the European Translation Centre (EKEMEL).
