The strangers are sea creatures: Hassan, a fish from the Red Sea, and Seku, a crab from the Atlantic coast of Africa. A shark attack separates Hassan from his fellows and he loses his way. The spirit of adventure leads him up the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean. Seku arrives unintentionally, in the tank of a cargo ship. Both find their new habitat and its residents unfriendly until they team up and make some new friends. This story of outsiders coming to terms with their new environment also shows how marine organisms enter the Aegean and compete for resources as a result of human activities. Suez enables fish to migrate; ships import sea creatures in ballast through Gibraltar; and marine organisms enter the Mediterranean from the Black Sea as global warming raises water temperatures. Myrto Delivorria’s cheerful illustrations give an underwater view of this story for children aged 7-9.
