Professor Maronitis scrutinizes war, homilia and homecoming – Odysseus’ three principal quests in the Iliad. Rather than discuss the life and personality of the hero or the authorship of the Iliad and the Odyssey, the author highlights the thematic unity and technical cohesion of the two epics, and the way that both of them balance the oral tradition with the novelty of the written word. His book combines years of intensive research with contemporary literary theory, narratology in particular. Maronitis formulates ten possible interpretations that bring each of his topics to a close on a questioning note, leading the reader neither to ponderous, rigid conclusions nor to ideologically coloured prettification, but to the productive heresy and insistent doubt which nurtures non-dogmatic study and research. Homeric Megathemes presents its themes in an engaging manner, and is sure to hold its readers’ attention to the last.
