A stray puppy subtly changes a boy’s life, teaching him the joys of friendship and the sorrows of loss. Children’s author Manos Kontoleon and illustrator Vasilis Papatsarouhas, both winners of multiple awards, have created a tender story for young readers in Angyra’s series on values. A little boy kicking a ball in a field dotted with bright-red poppies comes across a stray puppy under an olive tree. Without a second thought he rescues her, wondering if he should call her Olive, since her coat is as grey as the olive tree, or Poppy, since her tongue as red as the flowers. We never learn his name and he never makes up his mind about hers. She wins over the rest of his family and becomes his faithful companion. His experience of that friendship will comfort him when his pet has an accident that brings him his first experience of sorrow.
