Two citizens of impeccable reputation are found dead in impenetrably obscure circumstances in a nameless seaside town. There is a mysterious link between reality and the inventions of literature in Niki Anastasea’s new novel, which situates its mystery on a barely perceptible borderline – the line between the truth of life and its fictional representation. The murder takes place in a milieu that has long been subject to a process of disintegration, where the individual and the social have been stifled by an invincible existential inertia. Ennui and the absence of any solid point of reference overwhelm everything, both the heroes of the novel and the writer who has embarked on the task of recounting their fate. The Small Pleasures of Mr Evangelinos is an innovative take on crime writing, in which an ongoing game between the fictional heroes and verisimilitude counterpoints literary construction and literary illusion.
