Exploring Greece: Photographs 1898-1913 is a kaleidoscope of the Greek-speaking world, seen through a trove of photographs taken by French Hellenist Hubert Pernot. A language scholar, he travelled widely for his research. Along with the wax cylinders he carried to record local dialects and phonetics, Pernot also brought his camera and a keen interest in whatever he saw, taking a sympathetic but never sentimental approach towards his subjects. From the grand (panoramas of Athens and the Acropolis seen from Hymettus, antiquities in archaeological sites and museums) to the everyday (peddlers, carters, street markets, women at a well), Pernot’s sepia images give a rounded picture of what were still largely traditional communities. A thoughtful introduction by Aikaterini Koumourianou sets the context. Pernot was the director of the Sorbonne Institute of Modern Greek Studies, and these evocative 300 photographs, being published for the first time, are a selection from the institute’s collection.
