Vassilis Amanatidis paints a strange, unpredictable universe in Charybdis’ Dog, a world of the surreal and the irrational, where everything depends on the viewpoint we choose. In this setting of reflections and reverberations, neither plot nor action dominates. Instead we see the process of writing coming into being and unfolding, the struggle to create a literary composition on terrain where everything is up for redefinition. The author portrays sudden violence and crushing loneliness in an era that has tried in vain to acquire self-awareness. He explores the inability of the individual to integrate into the whole and the inability of the whole to create distinct individuals. The boundaries between imagination and reality disappear in situations where the chances of rational survival are alarmingly slim. Yet there is a charm in the ongoing fluidity of things, in their magical diffusion into ever-widening circles, without any prospect of conclusion or completion.
