Giorgos Veis leads us through China, Mongolia, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and Macao on a long journey into Asian cultures. He covers everyday life, history and contemporary political conditions in each country in a manner as natural as if he were walking alongside the reader, giving a guided tour to places he knows inside out. A poet, translator, critic and currently the Greek ambassador to Khartoum, Veis writes in the first person, in confessional style, never concealing his subjectivity, aware that he can only express his own sensitivities. He readily returns to subjects he has covered in earlier books, convinced that revisiting them always highlights, however subtly, a different aspect of his response. His approach is low key, and the hallmarks of his writing, be it about philosophy, travel writing, or mythology, are an absence of idealisation, a critical eye and a willingness to understand whatever meet the traveller’s eye.
