Fraud is set in the turbulent decade of the 1960s in Kavala, one of the largest tobacco producing centres of northern Greece. Ferocious professional competition among producers has a powerful effect on the everyday life of the characters, influencing not only their business decisions but also their emotions. Markoglou puts into play a number of separate but intersecting stories, the outcomes of which he deliberately leaves open till the end. There are love affairs that are never consummated because the heroes cannot overcome their debilitating weakness and unrelenting sense of insecurity. And there are characters that, unable to deal with their own existential crises, subside into confusion. In a fast-moving narrative crammed with incident, Markoglou brings to life an era when the United States and the Soviet Union are striving to promote their interests in the Balkans.
