Costas Haritos, the middle-aged, lower middle-class detective who stars in the crime novels of Petros Markaris, goes into action again. This time he himself becomes well and truly entangled when his daughter is captured and held hostage by unknown terrorists on the island of Crete. Haritos has to confront two problems at once – wresting his daughter from the clutches of the kidnappers and the enigma of a maniac who attacks media celebrities. The canny, aloof, cool-headed detective faces one of his most difficult personal moments. Non-stop action is fuelled by violent, ongoing clashes between the terrorists and police agents. The plot peaks in thrilling moments and dramatic crescendos that change the atmosphere from one moment to the next. In his crime fiction Markaris reveals the many ingrained problems that bedevil contemporary Greek society by means of a discreet, ironic commentary on both the psychology of his characters and the reality that surrounds them.
