Public events shape both individual and social life in The Shadow Clock by Thomas Skassis. Making bold use of history and his own imagination, the author depicts a time of tension and collective passion in the early nineteenth century. His heroes – a Corsican officer in Napoleon’s navy who has settled in Greece to teach maths and the mariner’s art, and a Greek lawyer of noble origins who becomes consul to the French and later to the English – constantly sense in the air the possibility of a great political and national awakening under the influence of the French Revolution.
Skilfully deploying his sources – works of history, literature, sociology, political theory, law and philosophy – Skassis has fashioned an unusual creation that is at once a historical novel, a novel of ideas and a political novel.
