A happy mix of story and image eases very young children into the mysteries of weights, measures and kitchen utensils. A dragon opens the refrigerator looking for something to eat but finds it too cold and decides to make himself a cake. When he lays out the ingredients he can’t make or tail of the recipe. How much is a kilo? How many bottles of milk should he use? Should he put the cake mixture in a saucepan or a tray? Readers help the hungry hero choose. At the end of the book is a cutout of the dragon they can attach to a string, and drawings they can fill in to consolidate the concepts of full, empty, and numbers up to ten.
Villie Karabatzia’s quirky illustrations – a mouse frolicking in the flour, sunbathing on the dragon’s head – match the upbeat tone of this verse tale.
